The Department of Anthropology at Wayne State University welcomes student interest in our BA major and our MA and PhD degrees (see info below). Our department is intellectually vibrant, offering a strong sense of intellectual community with a broad training across anthropological subfields and a strong applied focus.

Our 14 full-time faculty provide a close-knit and intellectually challenging environment with attention to students' individualized needs.  We are proud of our many recent alumni who are placed in professional positions in industry, government, and the nonprofit sector, as well as in academic institutions such as colleges and museums. We host several events during the academic year that are designed to enrich students' academic research and professional training.

Graduate Degrees in Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology offers both the Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, and is currently the intellectual home of over 80 graduate students.  We are actively recruiting well-qualified students, including both those with a B.A. in anthropology and those whose first degrees are in other fields.  Our M.A. program is the only one in Southeastern Michigan, and includes applied streams in business/organizational anthropology, medical anthropology, museum studies, and applied archaeology in addition to options in cultural, linguistic, physical, and archaeological anthropology.  Our Ph.D. program has strengths in business/organizational, urban, and medical anthropology, historical archaeology, with regional strengths in Latin America, Europe, and the United States. All of our programs are designed to provide intellectual breadth as well as specialization in relevant areas.

For general information on our graduate programs, download a PDF flyer on Graduate Studies in Anthropology. Prospective graduate students should definitely read our Frequently Asked Questions.
